The myth of “Lailaps”

Zeus gave his beloved Europa the magical dog Lailaps, who was so quick that he always captured his prey. As fate would have it, Lailaps encountered a fox that could never be caught. Thus the dilemma ensued: the dog that always captures its prey hunted the fox that can never be caught. The ancient world was endangered by this paradox, so Zeus turned both animals into stone. Because he loved Lailaps so much, he took him up to Mount Olympus. This is how the constellation “Canis Major” was formed.
